The Medieval and Byzantine Studies Program was organized in 1969 as an
interdisciplinary program, operating under the general direction of an
interdisciplinary committee selected from cooperating departments and schools of
the university. The purpose of the program is to provide scholars with a solid
basis for advanced research into the medieval period in subject areas which
require a background that transcends the boundaries of a single discipline.
Students are offered a wide range of courses, with requirements in Latin,
medieval history, philosophy and theology, and an extensive range of electives
in the participating schools and departments. We function on the undergraduate
and graduate levels, offering bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees, as
well as certification in Medieval and Byzantine Studies.
