The Catholic University of America

Undergraduate Programs for Undecided Majors

The School of Arts and Sciences does not offer a general studies degree; each student must select a major in one of the departments of the university, and be accepted by that department by the beginning of his or her junior year. The university recognizes, however, that many entering freshmen are uncertain which field they will select for a major and encourages students to explore their capacities and interests during their freshman and sophomore years. Students who informally select a department as entering freshmen are encouraged to test other interests, especially if it becomes apparent that the first selection of major is not appropriate. The selection of a departmental major during the freshman or sophomore years does not commit a student in any way; it is simply a convenience for advising. During these years, prospective majors and departments can be changed with minimum formality.

The major reason for making a tentative selection of a department at an early date is that an adviser from this department can best ensure that students fulfill the essential prerequisites for the program in which they are interested. At the same time, the university appoints advisers for the truly undecided, commonly referred to as "open majors." These advisers are available to discuss university programs, to recommend course schedules for freshmen and sophomores, and to assist students in coming to decisions on majors.

All majors have prerequisites. Therefore, students who wish to be advised by an adviser for open majors should study the foregoing program descriptions and be guided in selecting optional courses by the requirements of a program in which they might be interested.
