Arts & Sciences Degree in Philosophy
Philosophy is bound to both the religious and liberal arts tradition of this university. Its study enables a student to become more critical and articulate concerning his or her beliefs and judgments, and it acquaints a student with the intellectual foundations of much of Western culture. Students who major in philosophy are well qualified for any position in business, industry or government in which a liberal arts degree is desirable. Philosophy is especially recommended for students intending to pursue studies in law or theology. To meet the interests and needs of a variety of students, two majors are offered. The philosophy major program is designed to provide students with a broad philosophical background and the opportunity to do upper-division work in related disciplines. It is appropriate for those students who wish to use philosophy as a preparation for careers in business, industry, government, etc. This program is an excellent preparation for graduate studies and for the study of theology. The pre-law program is designed for students who wish to prepare for a career in law or related fields. The curriculum emphasizes those philosophical topics and skills pertinent to the study of law. Anyone wishing more information on these courses of study should feel free to contact the assistant dean in the School of Philosophy. Students in philosophy will take courses in the historical development of philosophy and in such specialized areas of philosophy as ethics and logic, as well as a senior seminar in their final year. It is generally expected that students will have had several courses in philosophy before entering the major. Any student considering a major in philosophy should see a philosophy adviser to discuss the program. It is advisable that students do this as soon as they decide to major in philosophy rather than waiting until the end of their sophomore year.
