The Catholic University of America

Arts & Sciences Degree in Music

The Department of Music within the School of Arts and Sciences offers a Bachelor of Arts program in music. The B.A. in music is recommended for students who desire basic music training within a broad liberal arts education, as opposed to the more specialized preparation provided by the Bachelor of Music degree. Please see Undergraduate Announcements for details about the B.A. and B.M programs.

Majors in the B.A. music program must audition in order to be accepted into the program. They take sequences of courses in ear training and sight singing, in harmony, form and analysis and in history of music. Majors also take eight semesters each of private instrumental, composition or vocal instruction and participation in performing ensemble along with a final senior recital. This core music curriculum provides a solid foundation for more specialized study at the graduate level. CUA music alumni work as performers, composers, educators, administrators, liturgical musicians and music therapists. CUA alumni are in every major symphony orchestra in the United States, and singers have either won the Metropolitan Opera National Auditions or are presently under contract with The Met.
